Okay.. I admit it... I'm totally hooked

I'd heard about Pinterest a few weeks back from Janet and I thought "That's nice." and immediately dismissed it as yet another time consumer. Then last week, for whatever reason, I decided to have a look and see what it's all about. Oh boy... I'm a dedicated pinner now!
What a great place to see all sorts of images... all the things that you like most... and pin your own images that other people may re-pin to their boards. It sounds rather simplistic and mundane.. at least it did to me at first, but once you get set up and start looking around it becomes a generally 'feel good' place where you're surrounded by all the eye candy you could possibly want to see and be inspired by.

My question is.. and this is part of the reason I resisted at first...

How in the world do you keep up with it all?! The last thing I needed or wanted was yet another site that would consume my time, yet I see so many familiar faces and know that they are on countless forums, twitter, facebook, linkedin, they're blogging, networking, shopping, selling, creating... How do you do it? Do you have everything tied into your iPhone/iPad and watch it all day long?

There must be a science or an art to keeping up with it all and if so I haven't a clue what it is. I just stop in occasionally and try to catch up, exercising a lot of discipline to get off and back in my studio.

So... I truly would love to know.... How do you keep up with it all???

Maybe he’s been kidnapped by the Biffs in the Mid Hudson Valley??? *

Answer: All of the above!

Okay, truth to be told, we the Biffs are not aliens, but Pine Bush, N.Y. is considered the UFO Capital of the world. You can read about the Pine Bush Phenomenon here. And no…. we didn’t kidnap him… he voluntarily got in the car. He did however treasure hunt in the Shawangunk Mountains on his way to Ellenville, N.Y. to lay out his plans for his soon to be released book promotion and one man art show at the Gallery Link in the Ellenville Library Museum. The reception will begin at 6pm on March 26th.

Something a Little Different

Recently I decided to re-visit an old love of mine.... oil painting. I'd turned my back for the past 20 years in favor of the excitement of mixed media art... finding landscape painting rather boring. I'm not totally sure why, but for some reason I needed to smell the paints and play with them again. So I've taken a few shots of the progression of a painting.. my first in 20 years.
Those of you who know me know that the Hudson River flows through my veins. I was born here and have lived in the Hudson Valley all my life. (Long time btw) So, I decided I'd paint a river scene.

This is a very basic outline of intention with a light wash in the sky:

Next I decided to make the sky a bit more dramatic .. then added the mountains:

I still didn't like the sky all that well so fussed with it some more, then added the reflections in the river and a few rocks in the foreground for depth:

A few bits of grass and a small island and I called it finished:

And now it's framed: (Looked like it took about 20 minutes to do didn't it?)

It felt like visiting an old friend to paint in oils again. I'll just add it to the plethora of mediums to use now and again.

The windows all have an animal theme and are far beyond the imagination in execution. I would love to be on the creative team that designs these windows!

Time to Breathe

The Wallkill River School show was a smashing success as it is every year. The gallery in Poughkeepsie got 4 of the 6 pieces intended for them so I think my obligations are fulfilled to the best of my ability these days. Whew!
It's a wonderful thing not to have to create something but to do it because you are totally inspired and gung ho to do it for yourself, which is where I am now. Yesterday I decided to put my new skills from the Richard Salley class to work and I must say it's getting pretty exciting. I wish I'd thought to photograph as I went along but I got totally obsessed with the project. I will post a picture when it's complete.

In the meantime, if you're not aware of it, Richard Salley and wife Jane will be featured in an amazing week long workshop in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico January 22-28. Here is the link to read all of the details. Puerto Vallarta Artist Retreat. I have no doubt that you would come away totally tanned and filled with new skills. I'm thinkin' the Sunday cocktail reception won't be such a bad thing either!

Whew! I'm actually ready!

Today is the annual Wallkill River School Holiday Bazaar and the Biffs are part of it. We've been working non-stop for weeks to get ready and we did it!

Those of you who do shows know how it is... do I have enough?... is there too much? .. how to display it to its best advantage?... what sort of people are buying?.... how do I price this?... etc. etc. etc. It can be very stressful and there is no science to it.. ya just wing it the best you can.

So.. the Wallkill River School Holiday Bazaar starts at noon and ends at 7pm during which time there will be a members reception as well. It's located in the beautiful old Patchett House on Route 17K in Montgomery, N.Y. If you are in the area I hope you'll stop by and say hello.

Next stop... BEACON..... please step carefully....

That's what you will hear if you take the Metro North train out of New York City. Normally Beacon is one of the stations where I catch the train for a day in the City but this past Saturday it was a new gallery for 'The Biffs' (Janet and I) to show our work...just jewelry this time. Funny how things happen... one day you're on an art studio tour meeting new artists.. next you're at their house for lunch.. and the next thing you're in a new gallery!

This is the River Center Gallery, part of the Scenic Hudson. It sits right on the Hudson River as part of a little park, right next to Dia (look that one up) and the train station. It's a converted barn and a fabulous space.
Reception was Saturday evening... with a great turnout.

Rusty, juicy, FREEBIE

I find nothing more beautiful than ornate cast iron... especially rusty cast iron! It's the first thing I gravitate to at a flea market. One thing that I love to do with the iron is to make prints of it on muslin and it's so easy. I just spray the iron piece with a little vinegar/water solution, lay the fabric over or under it, wrap in plastic and let nature take its course. Try it.. it's beautiful!

Use the fabric in your books, making dolls, assemblages... use the image to make stencils,incorporate into graphic arts... use your imagination. :o)

This morning, around 7am or so I happened to look out the window when the mist was just lifting and the sun peeking through the trees. I thought it was quite beautiful and thought I'd share it with you.

Pics and Links of the OC Studio Tour

At the risk of sounding like a teenager... the OC Studio Tour was awesome! We met so many talented people and saw some enviable studios. There were 50 participating artists but there was no way that we could have possibly done even 10 of them. Here are a few of the highlights:

First, we stopped at the Newburgh Art Supply where there was a very substantial inventory and the manager was very knowledgeable and happy to share all the information on local galleries and artist submissions. There currently is a call for submissions to the 4th Annual World's Smallest stretched canvas painting competition with a $500 prize. It's offered at the Hudson Valley Gallery, Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.

Next we stopped in to see 'Meadow', from Wood Rock Studios, a very talented mixed media artist.

We had a great chat with her, only to find out that she lives very close by and we are going to get together soon. It's always exciting to meet new artists and get caught up in their enthusiasm for their work.

Off to Warwick, N.Y. to the Strazza Gallery, located in the Clock Tower. What a gorgeous building and impressive studio with both Lisa Strazza's paintings and her husband's photographs. I particularly liked her 'Fish' series which she was kind enough to let me photograph.

Very dynamic and exciting work!

Right in the Clock Tower were two other artists, Femi Ford and Steven Kenny.

Femi Ford is also mixed media and her work is fascinating. Some paintings appear to be textiles when in fact they are painted, others are very subtle and dreamy with great attention to detail.

We had a lovely visit with Femi and headed back to see Steven Kenny. I had seen Steven's work before and it took my breath away. In conversation we learned that he had spent time studying his art in Rome which I find very apparent in his style. I have never seen such beauty in surrealism before and I think you will agree. Amazing work! This is just one of all my favorites of his paintings.

We spent quite a lot of time in Steven's studio just absorbing all the magic of his paintings, feeling the stories and so appreciating his talent in conveying those stories. Have a look at his website and previous works, you won't be disappointed.

Leaving the Clock Tower we headed over to see Lisa Zukowski's studio. Imagine driving up a country lane to find a magic cottage.. that's what it was like seeing her studio. Walking on a stone walkway through her gardens we entered a studio that any artist would love, love, love to be able to create in. Her work is very diverse, yet you can see favorite themes throughout. We were fascinated by all the varied techniques that she uses and also teaches in workshops. Have a look!

Unfortunately the day had disappeared and we had to head home. It was one of those whirlwind days that you lay in bed at night and absorb in all its detail.

Weekend Meandering and Treasure Hunt

A few weeks ago we attended a weekend wedding (Congratulations Cait and Jason!) in Hancock, N.Y. .. a sleepy somewhat forgotten little river town. It's where the East and West Branches of the Delaware River come together.

When we first arrived we passed this deserted looking storefront with these bizarre looking heads.. . bizarre.. must photograph!

Needless to say I wanted one (or more) of these heads! We're not sure if they were cement, plaster.. who knows? Peeking in the windows the store was cluttered with all manner of 'stuff' including a magnificent old woodstove, complete with the mica in the little windows.

Then, looking at an angle through the front door I saw this gorgeous old solid brass scale I would LOVE to take home. Not to weigh myself of course.. that wouldn't be prudent. ;o)

We looked all around for someone to ask about the store but the street was literally deserted. The next morning we checked at a local fly fisherman's shop to see what he knew. He said that the store had been closed for years and the gentleman who owned it had gone pretty well into seclusion. Oh well.. it's still lovely to look at!

The wedding was lovely and we had a great time, but now it's Sunday and time to head home. I decided to take the scenic route as it was a beautiful fall day and there wasn't any hurry. On our way out we saw this lovely mother and daughter.

We drove home over hill and dale, bordering the Delaware River all along the way. It was a beautiful drive and very relaxing.. until.... I spotted this!

Anyone who knows me knows I hate to ever turn around... except for this! A treasure hunters dream!

Orange County Arts Council-Open Studio Tour Weekend

Wow, it's going to be a great weekend!

Beautiful weather, beautiful leaves and the Orange County Open Studio Tour. There are 50 artists participating....everything from performing arts, oil painting, fiber arts, collage, assemblage etc. etc. etc. You may recognize the name Jonathan Talbot.. he'll be opening his studio this weekend as well. Trust me, his wife Marsha makes the best scones!

Open Studio Tour Opening Reception: Friday, October 21 from 6-8pm
Open Studio Tour-South: Saturday, October 22 & Sunday, October 23
Visual artists and performing art studios from Warwick, Florida, Goshen, Sugar Loaf, Chester, Monroe, Highland Mills, Cornwall, Blooming Grove, Newburgh and Rock Tavern will be opening their studios and providing a rare opportunity for the public to observe artists up close and personal during their creative process from start to finish. It is the Arts Council’s desire that the Open Studio Tour will open up the world of artists to everyone – from students to the seasoned collector to the first-time art buyer or observer, to the curious general public. We believe that through education, visitors become loyal customers and supporters of art and that this program will grow over the years. The Open Studio Tour-South Opening Reception is a Free event to the public and will be held at the Seligmann Estate, 23 White Oak Dr. Sugar Loaf

Still, so many good memories and inspiration to take us through the year until the next AIY... can't wait! In the meantime... remember you guys... we're going to have a studio day here so we don't have to wait so long to see one another again.

LOVE those LEDGERS!

Once again Seth Apter has come up with a great idea. He took a photograph of some papers and artwork in his studio and voila... art!
He has given us the opportunity to participate in a collaborative exercise where we can photograph 'stacks' of anything in our studios.. papers, journals, books etc.

Considering my studio is one big stack I was hard pressed to decide what to photograph. Ultimately my antique ledgers won. Not only are they gorgeous on the outside, but the inside holds history.. the beautiful handwriting... the things that they wrote and just the feel of the paper.... love it!

So here they are... my stack :o) (Now don't ask me to photograph 'stash'.. I'd be there all day!)

Artist Estate Sale

A couple of weeks ago I was up in Woodstock at an artist's estate sale... actually two of them. I couldn't believe the number of cars there so bright and early. Obviously a lot of eager artists looking for treasures.

I have such mixed feelings about estate sales. Somehow it feels like I'm intruding on something very private and sad. The other side of me says "I will love and use these things, knowing how much they meant to the previous owner." It was bittersweet to see all the lovely art supplies along with works of art throughout the house. Nonetheless I was happy to have some beautiful new treasures to add to my inspirations. From The Corners of My Mind

From September 1st through October 31st my work will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Ellenville N.Y. Library Museum. The reception is the 10th of September from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. I hope if you're local that you may be able to stop by.
Since I have so many different avenues in my pursuit of art... ie... graphic arts, collage, assemblage, painting, jewelry etc.(Is there a name for A.D.D. artists?*) I had to come up with a name that would cover it all.. what better than 'From the Corners of My Mind'. (Sometimes a scary place) ;o)

Good Old Fashioned Doodlebug

When I was little my Dad had what we called the 'Old Doodlebug' which was a rusty old truck that he used to do most anything and everything. We always got to ride in it and on it even though it was missing most of its floor and was most definitely not road worthy. It was a neat old truck that I haven't thought about it for a long time. When I was coming home from New Hampshire through Vermont I spotted this old doodlebug and just had to stop to take a picture. A sweet little bit of Americana now used for advertising.... clever!

Day 4.. The Legend of the Unimoose

High up on Ellsworth Hill

Bright and early Sunday morning Bri (my daughter) and I took off for Ellsworth Hill by way of Rumney, N.H., where there are some bogs that we have frequented in the past hoping to see moose. If you've read my past posts, Bri and I have 2 theories about moose. #1 They should be called Unimoose as they are really a fairy tale animal used to attract tourists to New England. #2 There is one moose and he is rented out between Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Nonetheless we never lose hope that one day it will be New Hampshire's turn to have the moose and we will spot him. So up Ellsworth Hill we go, past Stinson Lake to the first bog, (no moose) past the waterfall and down the hill to the other side where there is a spectacular bog.. I believe it's actually Ellsworth Bog.

After leaving Ellsworth Bog and coming to the bottom of the mountain we headed into Thornton to one of our favorite places, Benton's Sugar Shack. It's quintessentially New England with a feel of the 50's or 60's, and they serve the best pancakes with pure maple syrup. The inside has all sorts of interesting things hanging on the walls and ceiling and lots of goodies for sale such as jellies and maple syrup.

If you should decide to go to the Sugar Shack for breakfast, plan on going early or waiting for a table as it's one of the most popular places in the area.

Once again the Pillsbury Dough Girls hit the road, off to Chesley's Glory Station, a favorite place to shop on Route 3 in West Campton. It's a good sized building full of every sort of country treasures.

Plan to spend some time, as it takes about an hour to see everything in the store... plus you have to struggle with whether you will have some of their homemade fudge.

A little lighter in the purse we left to head home for a swim in the river that is on my daughter's property. We could have easily zipped down Route 93 but I opted to take the back roads instead. We came down through Plymouth headed towards Rumney where there is a traffic circle. As I was rounding the circle I noticed quite a few cars parked on the side of the road and people milling about. We both thought... 'OMG.. it must be a (the one and only) moose!' I stopped and asked a couple walking back to their car and sure enough we had just missed the moose. Devastated is a good word to describe how we felt having just missed him. They said he had just walked back into the woods.

Everyone left the area but we decided to hang around for awhile to see if maybe ... just maybe... he might come back out where we could see him. Sure enough, within minutes my daughter gasped "There he is!" and just as quickly he was gone. All I saw was a tree bending over where he had been rubbing his rack. Now I'm really devastated! So close... all I wanted was a glimpse... but no... no moose for me... I'm ready to go home now. We stayed a little bit longer (thanks to Bri) and the next thing you know people were stopping their cars all around. Not 20 feet ahead of where we were sitting, behind a group of trees..... it was HIM!

He's REAL!

He stayed around for probably 10 minutes or so, not at all disturbed by all the excitement and picture taking. Moose can be dangerous creatures under normal circumstances and can charge at any given moment if they are disturbed, but this guy just nibbled at the grass and sipped water from the bog. It almost seemed like he was posing for the cameras. A highly unusual sight to see and we saw it! I guess by now he's been taken to either Maine or Vermont for their turn, but if you should be near Rumney Circle look down in the bog on 3A..... he may be back. ;o)

The excitement over, but not the thrill, we headed back home for that swim in the river. It was about 90 degrees and I was so looking forward to it. It's a lovely little river with no one around so we have it all to ourselves. A perfect end to a perfect day, just my daughter and me... life is good.

Day Three - It's a dirty job.....

Now it's day three of my trip to New Hampshire ...

Idyllic weather, early morning dew... off we go to Aunt Kathy's house. We'd already called Aunt Kathy to ask if she would mind if we snooped around her old shed for treasures. Not gold coins, real treasures like rusty tools, wooden boxes, metal bits and the remains of a shoe shop. The shed is leaning now and probably won't survive too many more New Hampshire winters so now is the time to rescue anything possible and I of course am happy to volunteer for the 'New England Pickers' job.

Our first stop is Aunt Kathy's kitchen, the quintessential New England country kitchen full of the aroma of rising dough and cinnamon. This morning she is making homemade fritters and cinnamon buns. Now you have to understand that when you are away from home none of the rules apply and calories do not exist. So with that in mind and a dish of pure maple syrup in hand, we dive into these fluffy still warm delights with vigor. Of course it starts out with 'Oh, I'll just try one, have to be good you know.", to "Well, maybe just one more.. a small one." and "Oh gee, I still have some syrup left, I need something to clean it up with."

It's a good thing the cinnamon buns were still rising or we never would have made it to the shed. As it was we were walking Pillsbury Dough ~~Boys~~ Girls trodding off through the field. Once there, peeking through the window, the adrenalin kicked in and we were ready to dive in. I should clarify, 'we' is me and my daughter, who in the past would 'ew' at anything relating to getting dirty and who now sees 'junk' in a whole new light. She's already an accomplished jewelry designer (Mystikal1981) but I see her one day creating her own assemblages from found objects.

Unfortunately I got so caught up with the search that I neglected to photograph the inside of the shed. There are still amazing old free standing tools with beautiful ornate cast iron wheels and gears, tiny cupboards and drawers and still more things in the loft. The only picture I have from inside is of a spider web that was glistening in the sun.

You can barely see it in the picture, but it was quite pretty. I don't like to think about who occupies that perfectly geometric home, I just admire the workmanship from afar.
After a whole lot of precarious climbing, digging, sneezing and lugging we came away with some very inspirational pieces, my favorites being the little wooden boxes. Here's just a few of the things that we brought out of the shed:

Gorgeous patinas, old labels, lots of rusty bits.... a little piece of heaven.. studio heaven that is.

Now I want to know what's in the other shed!

I can't think of anything more fun than rummaging through an old barn or shed with my daughter... unless it's the next day when we head out to.....

If I were asked 'Who do you know that accomplishes the most in any given time frame?" it would have to be Seth Apter. I'm convinced he has lots of artistic clones running all over Manhattan visiting galleries while he creates new and interesting ways for artists to connect and collaborate... and he does it so well! Day Two - Friday - A Day With the Whales

We're back in New Hampshire again! This is the second day of my trip and my daughter and I have taken off bright and early for a whale watch leaving from Rye, New Hampshire. The day could not have been more perfect, the weather was sunny and cool with gentle waves on the ocean in the Bay of Maine. Cameras in tow we eagerly boarded the 'Granite State' whale watching boat. They take you out about 1 1/2 hour to what is known as Jeffrey's Ledges. Apparently there is a great deal of food in that area which of course draws in the whales. Here we are, on our way out to sea leaving a gorgeous turquoise wake.

Why is the theme song from Gilligan's Island in my head? That's right.. that was only a 3 hour tour, this one was 5 1/2. :o)

We passed a couple of islands on our way out, one with a lighthouse.

There is a narrator on the boat continually keeping you up to snuff on what there is to see, the fact that we should expect to see Humpback Whales and the statistics about the different types of whales. There were members of the Whale Conservancy on board ready to observe and note recognizable whales as well as troll for a sample of the food that the whales are eating in a big cone shaped net. While on this trip they actually found a tiny sea creature that they'd never seen before. We're watching closely all the way out to get a glimpse of a dolphin or whale.. such a broad expanse to watch.. no land in sight and nothing so far.

It was a lovely ride out to the ledges and before long we saw spouting in the distance. The narrator lets you know right away.... "Spouting at 2 o'clock!" so everyone dashes to look at 2.. then she shouted "Dive at 10 o'clock!" and so on. I highly recommend if you consider going to go on the early morning excursion. There were very few people on board so it was very comfortable and easy to move from one side to the other to view the whales.

As it turns out even the narrator was astounded because this immense FinWhale was suddenly right in front of the boat. They backed off the engines immediately as they would have hit it otherwise. I can't even begin to describe the feeling of seeing such a huge creature...I was in complete awe. These animals are rare in the area. They are the largest whale off the East Coast measuring 70 to 88 feet long.. imagine! And one of them just rose up in front of us like Jules Verne's Nautilus!

The Fin Whales are so huge they rise gently and then submerge like a submarine. You won't see the whole splashing tail in the air display like the Humpbacks. If you watch closely you will see a large band of water turn a vivid turquoise just before the Fin Whale surfaces. The most amazing thing was there was not only one Fin Whale, there were four! They said it was a rare privilege to have seen them as we did as they are the second largest whale in our waters.

We watched the Fin Whales travel together, coming up for air regularly, then we left them alone to go looking for the Humpbacks. Sure enough, within minutes we caught sight of them. This one was one that they could identify and had named 'Chickadee' and she was full of showmanship this morning. She repeatedly did what they call a tail breech out of the water, with a loud splash back down. She was traveling with another whale that just quietly blew from his blow hole along side of her.

Keep in mind that even though the Humpbacks are smaller than the Fins, these whales grow to 52 feet and weigh in at 30 to 50 TONS!

You can just see Chickadee's mate blowing a spout of water to the right of her tail.

We watched Chickadee and her mate for some time, then headed back to shore. We'd been there for a couple of hours and it was time to head in.

No land in sight for about an hour, then we get a glimpse of the islands, one with a wind machine.

Then before you know it we're nearly to shore where all the sea birds congregate to gossip.

Back on land, here is a picture of our boat. It was a thrilling experience and I highly recommend these people for the trip. They're very friendly, know exactly where to find the whales and are very knowledgeable.

Now off to Ray's for some lobster!

We sat out on the porch overlooking the ocean eating the most delicious Lobster Pie! After lunch we had a pleasant walk in the surf, then off to Concord N.H. where Bri was getting a henna tattoo and I was having a 1 1/2 hour massage courtesy of my daughter. Does it get any better? I don't think so!

My Backyard - A pictorial by Pat Peters

For those of you in the area, there is a reception for Pat Peters this Saturday, 12:00pm - 2pm at the Ellenville Public Library Museum, 40 Center St., Ellenville, N.Y. where they are featuring canvas prints of her photography. I've seen the exhibit and it's breathtaking both in composition, execution and color. Pat is from Cragsmoor in New York and her work is centered around the surrounding landscape, views from the Shawangunk Mountains, historical buildings and an intimate look at nature. I hope you will be able to attend the reception for Pat, you won't be disappointed. If you can't attend, stop by the library now through September 1st to see the exhibit.

Last Thursday I headed up to New Hampshire to visit with my daughter Brianne and I thought you may like to tag along as it was an incredible 4 days with lots of pictures. This was a weekend that couldn't possibly have been more perfect, the weather, the excitement and of course the treasured time with my daughter.

So, off we go!

Thursday:

My route of choice is up through New York and into Vermont, then crossing over into the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Have you ever taken pictures while you're driving? Not recommended, but rather necessary when you're on your own, so please forgive the shots through the windshield.

Route 7 N in Vermont is such a beautiful and welcoming sight with black eyed susans in abundance and the mountains ahead.

Up and over those magnificent mountains, all the ski lodges and maple sugar shacks coming into view. Oh and don't forget the 'Moose Crossing' signs. No moose, just signs. At this stage I think that there may be one moose in all of New England and he's traded back and forth between Vermont and New Hampshire. I can't tell you how many hours my daughter and I have spent sitting in bogs hoping to see even just a glimpse of a moose. We now call them 'Unimoose' as they seem to be more of a fairy tale than reality.

After about 5 hours driving I cross over into New Hampshire for lunch at Mickey's in Enfield N.H. My daughter and her husband meet me there for their oh so good Lobster Corn Chowder. No counting calories on this trip! Mickey's is a great family friendly place with a menu that will surprise you for sure.

It's become a tradition for Bri and I to go to this totally hidden away gem and bead store in Enfield by Crystal Lake. (Background music from Friday the 13th) Gemstar Gemstone 427 Shaker Boulevard Enfield, New Hampshire. They have everything imaginable for the serious jeweler to the hobbyist.
Outside the shop are these wonderful towers of Amethyst.

There is such a huge inventory of gems that I can't begin to remember half of their names so I'll just show you a small sampling. If you know what they are then perhaps you could leave a comment for everyone else. Of course nothing is as breathtaking as seeing these stones in person but it will give you the idea.

This is the walkway, filled with smooth round gemstones. Every home should have one just like this!

If you can pull yourself away from the wide array of stones outside, then let's go inside to the jeweler's paradise.

It's a rather small store, but it's packed to the rafters with every conceivable bead, stone, (semi precious and precious) pearls and findings.

I managed to keep within budget both for myself and the Biff believe it or not. :o)

Off we go to Bri's house past the Shaker Museum

and later on the Smith River.

It's such a lovely, peaceful reflective river.

Just a few miles down the road we arrive at Bri's house to sit (after 6 hours of driving) quietly in her lovely new gazebo. I'd love to sleep out there but there is a Fisher Cat hanging around and I think a visit from him would send me flying into the house... or out of my mind... one of the two. ;o) There are many audio video recordings of Fisher Cats online, as it's one of the most eerie and blood curdling sounds you could ever hear in the middle of the night.

A snack and a spooky movie and I'm off to bed (inside).... in anticipation of tomorrow (Friday). An unbelievably perfect day ... wait till you see!

Imagine, art created from a tiny shoe. I know I would never have thought of it, but then that's the genius of Keith LoBue. He is not only one of the nicest and most incredibly talented people I know, he thinks so far outside the box that no one can find him or keep up with him. His style is so totally unique and he is so very humble about it even though his work is in numerous galleries, collected around the world, he's been published and his work is in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and the Museum of Arts & Design in New York collections.

It doesn't seem possible, but if you aren't aware of it already, Seth Apter has done it again. He has compiled a list of artists with their work and is presenting them as 6 separate projects in his online project, 'The Pulse'. It's a wonderful opportunity to get to know other artists and their work. Here it is in Seth's words:

Welcome to the 5th edition of The Pulse -- The State of the Art -- a survey in words and pictures of the online artist community. The Pulse is a collaborative project that aims to introduce you to new artists, help you get to know familiar faces even more, and allow you access into the creative hearts and minds of a very talented crew of individuals. Stash Overflow Shed

I always love to see all the goodies that other artists find at flea markets and antique shops, so I thought I would share a few pictures of my treasures. It started out that I could organize everything very nicely in my studio, but those days are over. My husband built a 12'x12' shed for all of the larger pieces and basically all the overflow. Here are a few pictures ... a sneak peek into my not so secret stash.

This is how it sits towards the back of our property, tucked in the woods... with our dog Dakota patrolling the perimeter. 'Dakota' a/k/a Great Mole Hunter.

Now you have to imagine the smell of fresh pine.

A small sample of the glass insulators....clear, aqua, blue, amber etc.

I have two of these, they're from either side of an antique hutch. The beveled glass is thick and rippled. I'd love to know what they've seen.

A sampling of old books just waiting to be altered and given a new life.

LOVE the lofts! So much can be stored up out of the way! See those big buckets? They're full of wooden beads!

The view out one of the windows. I'd love to live in this little cabin in the woods! Well, maybe just sleep out one night. :o)

Antique clock cases... aren't they just screaming 'assemblage'!?

Cast iron stove toppers. They have lovely patterns, perfect for rust staining and/or making stamps.

Old tin boxes. The little red one is a bank where you can divide up your savings.

This clock case is HUGE... but I know it will tell me what it wants to be one day.

Antique farm box and tray along side a box of old license plates and 8mm projector. I actually have old films!

These are just a couple of pieces from an antique organ that I took apart years ago. It was in an old barn and totally destroyed by the time I got to it, but there is always something to salvage.

An old Macy's crate.... a present from my Biff!


This old clock case actually has little doors on the sides and the oval is glass. Imagine the possibilities!

Old scales, typewriters and sewing machines up in the back loft.

Towards the back is a very sweet little tin kitchen set in red and white.


Love these old advertisements on wooden crates!

I think I need to do some new photos of my studio so you can see just how full it's gotten and how badly I needed this shed. Now I can't even go in the shed, as there is a bluebird family in residence and I'll have to wait until they fledge their young.

Just had to share one more picture. Years ago I brought a tiny piece of my grandmother's rambling roses to this property. The roses now completely cover the back bank and I have planted a small piece on the arbor this year.... it's in full bloom now... with another bird's nest inside!

I'm so excited.... "1000 Steampunk Creations" has finally arrived! It's so much fun to see my artwork as well as art friends of mine published in this book. What a gorgeous book too! I recently saw an exhibition of fiber artist Diane Savona's work in Rock Tavern, N.Y.. It was breathtaking with her choice of vintage fabrics, the dimension and pure genius of construction. Even though pictures never do justice to seeing someone's art in person I'll let this sampling speak for itself. If you ever have the opportunity to see her work in person I highly recommend it. Every piece tells a story... you'll be there for hours. Enjoy!

This has been such an incredible year for me with shows and books etc... that I decided I want to share and have some fun with my art buddies and blog hoppers.

My favorite quote is from Henry Van Dyke "Use the talents that you possess, for the woods would be silent if only the best birds sang." How true and how inspirational! Everyone possesses talents. We all have gifts to give and nothing should stop us from expressing those gifts whether it's art, music, writing, dancing, singing etc. etc... Maybe you want to be a chef! Whatever it is, you need to express yourself and revel in the joy of sharing those talents.

For those of you who hadn't heard in advance, High Falls Mercantile, High Falls, N.Y. celebrated their 7th anniversary this past Saturday and I had the honor of being their featured artist. It was a whirlwind day of people coming and going, compliments, OOOoo's and Ahhhh's, picture taking, champagne flowing and delectable delights. It's a bit of a blur but for the most part I remember all of the lovely people that I met. Everyone was excited to be in the lively environment, sharing Jeff, Larry and Cait's big day. (They sure do know how to throw a party!) We exchanged emails, talked about art...treasure hunts... and our love for cemeteries too!

Those of you who did come to the event, thank you so much for your support. It's always wonderful to see a friend amongst the crowd. Special thanks to Sal and Ellen for the flowers and good wishes. Heartfelt thanks to my Biff Janet, my daughter Brianne (nickname kept secret) and to Joey (nickname to come) for being my 'possee' for the day. It means everything to me for you to share in my day.

And.... very special thanks to Jeff, Larry and Cait for giving me the gift of the day and the gift of their friendships. I love you guys!

Inspired Remnants, Curious Dreams

I want to share what I believe to be the best mixed media book I have purchased in a very long time. It's entitled "Inspired Remnants, Curious Dreams" authored by Kerin Gale of 'Remnants of Olde'. Kerin has taken this great product to a much higher level. Her book is clear, concise and fun to read. And did I say inspiring? I couldn't wait to get my hands back into the clay to try her ideas and techniques. Kerin also does online workshops with the epoxy and apoxie clays. You can read all about it on her blog as well as the blog online tour where you can leave a comment and have the chance to win some amazing prizes. A thousand apologies!

I know... I have been MIA for the most part for a few months now. Multiple reasons and most resolved. I plan to be back up and running and keep this blog fun and interesting once again.
I want to mention first that I had a visit from 'down under' last week and we had such a lovely time. I finally met Cherie (pronounced Sher-REE) from Sydney.

She and her lovely daughter 'Jus' came together on the train from NYC on probably the most miserable, rainy and chilly day of spring, but we still had a great time. And.... I got all sorts of pressies too! (presents) If you follow her link you can follow her travels.. she and Jus are having a grand time!

Secondly, I got my 'mojo' back... tons of inspiration and motivation. High Falls Mercantile is having their 7th Anniversary Celebration and I'm the featured artist! I'm so excited... so incredibly honored that they are featuring my work for their very special celebration. Best part is...I just adore Larry, Cait and Jeff and you will too. If you are in the area please stop in to say hello and see the magic that they create. Did I mention how wonderful it smells inside?

This is a rare and wonderful look inside the nest of a Bald Eagle that has laid and hatched 3 eggs. You can watch them in the wild on a daily basis, seeing the interaction of the male and female and the 'pecking order' of the little ones. Just fascinating!

Something New and Exciting for the Studio

Those of you who read the post about High Falls Mercantile may remember that I mentioned a new printers cabinet and more to follow.

Well, here are the pictures of my new treasure. It has the most beautiful patina and the type drawers are perfect for works in progress. I'm so thrilled to have it and and goes beautifully with my oak library card file cabinet. It also has all sorts of bangs, dents and stains but I love it all.. it tells a story.

Now here was a challenge.... All the drawers had wooden dividers that prevented me from using the full depth of the drawer, so one at a time I carefully lifted them out, complete with nails and have them stored for future use.

Please don't hate me because I have a printer's cabinet. ;o)

HIGH FALLS MERCANTILE....... and me :o)

About a month or so ago my friend Denise said she would accompany me to pick up my new printers cabinet (more on that later) and while we were out and up that way she said I must go see these incredible tool sculptures at High Falls Mercantile in High Falls, N.Y.

She actually had told me about them prior to that and I had perused their website... in total awe. Imagine taking old tools and creating beautiful sculptures with them and seeing the art in their simple yet elegant forms. Hard to imagine unless you look on their website and/or visit the store. All I could say (a little jealously) to Larry, the owner/designer was that it was pure genius.

Walking through High Falls Mercantile was simply breathtaking with all of the magic that is created there. I can't even begin to describe it... you must visit their website and see some of the incredible/unusual/magical things that they have. The store is owned and operated by both Larry Ruhl and Jeff Serouya and their combined efforts and incredible taste make this a must see.

I'm rambling aren't I? It's so hard to describe this store... the antiques.. the new... the fragrance and colors.... and let's not forget sweet Cait who is their shopkeeper (in charge ;o) ) who greets you with her genuine smile when you first enter the store. Let's just say it's an experience..... a lovely sensory experience tucked in the woods of High Falls, N.Y.

Okay, back to that day with Denise. We went to the mercantile and we were both so excited .. first pointing to this piece.. then another.. and another. Then Denise remarked that she thought my work would fit right into the whole feel of the mercantile... both my jewelry and assemblages. It had never occurred to me until she said that... and frankly I agreed. ... their aesthetic... my aesthetic... so in tune.

Soooo... long story shortened... I am so pleased that I now have some of my work in the High Falls Mercantile. Here are some pictures to whet your appetite. I hope that one day you will be able to experience the mercantile yourself but at the very least go spend some time on their website.

Somebody Stop Me!!!

Okay, I know I'm not alone in this because there are way too many people out there de-stashing all the time. I can't count the number of times I've said to myself... 'You have to stop buying stuff for the studio.... you have enough!'

Weeellll.....there was this yard sale that was a combination 'cleaning out the attic/garage/basement estate sale.' Could you have resisted? And as it turns out it was someone I knew who was so very generous with me.. and my addiction.

I guess I'm a hopeless junkaholic.... there's no hope for me. I can't resist old hardware etc. etc. etc..... I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. I've spent the past 2 days washing everything because I refuse to put it away all dusty/greasy/nasty.

It was all worth it.... I feel like King Tut!

I got my Flip Pal portable scanner!

For those of you who have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about... here is a link to my original post about the Flip Pal.

What a cute little thing and so amazingly accurate. I thought I'd test it out first thing this morning on a huge old bible cover. Remember now.. the beauty of this little guy is no matter how big the image is it can stitch it together.

I scanned this old bible cover in 9 passes (yes.. huge) to test out the stitching capability of the scanner and here is the result:

I've left the image large enough so you can click on it to see it larger. Can you see any indication at all that the image was stitched from 9 separate images?

Now... one thing you have to remember is to be sure to overlap with each pass. As you can see by the small black patch on the bottom, I missed that overlap... so that was my fault. I could have gone back and done it again but I think you should see what happens so you can avoid it.

Pretty cool huh? Now I can scan anything/everything no matter where I go and it's all on one tiny chip ready to be read/stitched.

Sounds like I own stock in the company doesn't it? No, I have no financial interest in the company. The woman who did the demo for me last month is trying to raise enough credit with the company to get one for the Historical Society so they can scan old pics and documents for the society.

'Nuff said... I love it!

As Promised.. Art Is.. Adventures with Keith Lo Bue and Michael De Meng

I actually find this post a bit daunting as there was such a flurry of activity the whole 'Art Is You' weekend. Workshops, laughing, seeing old friends, laughing, making new ones, laughing, vending, laughing, eating yummy stuff, yep ...laughing, The Miracle of You Art Auction etc.... and we arrived on Saturday. Things had been going full swing since Wednesday. It seemed like we were ... yes... we really were on the run (and laughing) the whole time and loving every minute of it. Sallianne and Ellen did such a fabulous job of coordinating the event and making it the best possible experience for everyone.

Wait until you see who they have lined up for March of next year and then October! March Madness/Art Is Who

This is Janet's and my 3rd year attenting Art Is You and it gets better and better every time we go.

This time we took a one day class with Michael De Meng called 'A Change of Heart'. I found one of the most valuable lessons was when Michael demonstrated all of his paint formulas.. of course including "Uszhhh!!!", "Serial Killer Red" or "Dirty Doll Pink".

Michael has a great... albeit macabre sense of humor. I finished my heart... well... nearly... I have big plans for how to display it.

We also took a two day class with Keith Lo Bue

"Lasting Impressions: Etching & the Found Object". This was our second time learning from Keith and we agree that he's just the best. I would take classes from him in anything he chooses to teach. We learned soooooooo much! He's such an amazingly talented/sweet/caring/attentive/sharing wonderful teacher. No, I don't really stalk him but I told Sallianne I want to take him home and keep him in a cage in my studio....lol

When we're in his class we just like to absorb all the information and then take it home to work. .. and there is so much to absorb! This is a sheet of Keith's monogram/logo on brass:

Now (the headless) Keith is demonstrating the etching process.

Here is a piece of brass that Keith cut from brass (effortlessly I might add).

And here it is with his monogram and domed, ready to be mounted..... such perfection!

Autumn Splendor in the Shawangunks

This is only one small area of the Shawangunks showing part of what we call 'The Ridge'.

Weekend Wanderings

I hope you all had a great weekend. It was glorious here, with all the trees turning their vibrant fall colors. The sun was shining, the air was sweet and Saturday was a great day to get out and about.

Janet and I generally plan on Saturdays to be 'our day'. We've just about got her family acclimated to it but they would much rather she stayed home and played with them.... too bad... so sad! lol

Anyhow, I read that there was a metal salvage place up in Kingston so that was a 'must do' as well as the Hudson Valley Materials Exchange in New Paltz which I have written about before. It's a treasure trove of materials donated by different manufacturers. It might be wooden circles, marble tiles, doors, windows, paper, fabric... you name it it's there, so much fun to root through and the prices are very cheap cheap cheap. They do a great job there, keeping all these products/bi-products out of the landfills.

So, we did the Materials Exchange and headed up to Kingston on Rte 32 which connected with 213... easy peasy.... and a beautiful ride. BUT....... when we're nearly there suddenly we come upon a closed bridge and detour. Long story short... round and round we go.... 213 detoured this way... that way.... over hill .. over dale... and we never did find the metal place. The comedy of errors was compounded by the fact that not only I forgot my cell phone... but so did Janet!

We'll go up again sometime and all in all it was a great day. Just wanted to share one of the pictures I took along the way. It's of the tower at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz. Enjoy.... and have a great week.

What is it about auctions?

Is it the vast array of antiques and collectibles? Is it the people watching? Is it that one treasure that you spotted in preview that you just can't live without? The competition? The education? Of course it might be the hot dogs with sauerkraut but I doubt it.

This past Saturday Janet and I ... as usual joined at the hip.... decided to take a quick preview of a local auction. No such thing. This auction had such a diverse collection of treasures I could feel the excitement within the first 5 minutes of being there. My first find was 2 very old, very distressed old clocks that I had to have. The second was among boxes and boxes of books, a box FULL of old ledgers dating from 1906 that I also had to have! I couldn't wait for the bidding to begin! I knew I just couldn't live without either... that I must have them.
We sat for about an hour when the journals came up for bid. I was so hoping that they wouldn't break up the box and start selling the ledgers individually. No, they are selling the WHOLE BOX of journals together as one lot! The bidding started at $10 and between myself and one other woman it steadily progressed. No, I was not going to show a moment's hesitation. She needed to know that I was going to have those ledgers no matter how many times she bid against me.

I got them! I think Janet was as excited as I was. There are quite a few more than in this picture and the most beautiful ones aren't showing. (Too lazy to go back downstairs)

Trying to look cool/calm/collected when handed the box I wanted to stand up and do a kabuki dance, instead I decided to take them straight out to the car(lest someone take my treasure away) and when I nearly dropped the heavy box into the car this big cloud of dust blew up in my face. S'okay.. that means they've been tucked away in someones attic for a century... adds to the intrigue.

We stayed for a couple of hours and they auctioned off countless old coins, jewelry, original photographs that were part of the estate of a Daily News reporter. There was Elvis, Jackie Kennedy, John and Oko.. etc. etc. .. going for big bids. Two gorgeous spool cabinets went way over my bidding limits... I could go on and on. It was great fun, but it was hot in there! I left an absentee bid on the clocks and we headed back to my house where my husband had dinner nearly ready. So nice to come home after a hard day of bidding to a home cooked meal. ;o)

Janet and I are very fond of period movies and we'd been watching a series called 'The Aristocrats', so that's what we were engrossed in when the phone rang around 9 or so. "Hello, this is *** auction market calling to let you know that you've won the clocks." Another Kabuki dance! I got the two most precious things in my mind's eye that day!

So what is it about auctions? It's all of the above...(well, maybe not the hot dogs with sauerkraut) just plain exciting and fun... and I won the ledgers and clocks!

I just had to share this little gem with everyone!

A woman from the local Historical Society demonstrated the greatest little hand held/lightweight/amazing scanner last Sunday and I am one of the first pre-production orders. It comes out in October and it's called a Flip Pal. It doesn't need to be hooked to your computer as it has a chip.... you can scan in books, in albums, pictures on a wall. AND... if it's a large picture you can scan it in sections and the software stitches it together for you automatically. I could go on and on about it... but here is a link to her page that describes the Flip Pal. If you click on the word Flip Pal on her page it will take you to the manufacturers page where you can purchase the scanner. First look at the Youtube videos though... you will be so excited by the possibilities.

If you go directly from her page to the manufacturer's page and make your purchase she will get credit for doing the demo and could earn a scanner for the Historical Society. They could definitely use one for old documents and pictures!

Can't wait to get this. I can't tell you how many times I've had to verrrrry delicately smash an old book or try to get a picture out of an album. No more... that little gem will fit right in my purse!

Some of you may have tried to pay a visit this past couple of months and been greeted by an 'Invitation only' message. For this I apologize, but it all relates to an episode where I was being threatened and harassed. I'm hoping that childish endeavor is over now and things can get back to normal.

A lot has happened in my life in the past months and I hope to share some of it with you soon. Right now I just wanted to open the door once again to my friends and say hello, I missed you.

Time to move on....

When something begins to interfere with my time to create, to work on my art, it needs to be eliminated. I feel I have done my part in defense of my friend Anne and here is where it stops. I need to devote my time and energy to my artwork, not to childish games online. Therefore I have decided to delete the post regarding the incident in June and move on. Anne will find her own way to justice without my help.

I suggest you move on as well....

The time has come when I find it necessary to publicly state that I have personally been threatened regarding my previous post detailing the events that took place in New Paltz June 19th. If you haven't read it yet, please do, as it relates in precise and truthful detail what happened. Unfortunately this has caused a certain party to go into a rage, writing juvenile slurs and threats both here on my blog and now Facebook. I would discuss this post with the party involved but he has chosen to hide behind an anonymous identity. I found it necessary to delete his comments and threats but I have in addition chronicled those posts complete with IP addresses for future reference should I need to contact the authorities.

I am not the only person who experienced that day in New Paltz, nor am I the only one who felt it necessary to tell the story as it happened, however I seem to be the chosen target for this person's anger.

It's time to come out from hiding and discuss this as adults. I have no way of contacting you as you continue to hide behind anonymous and hidden posts. Feel free to email me at any time if you can talk about this without rage, insults and threats.

For those of you visiting from his Facebook post, take time to evaluate the truth and recognize that you are being used for vengeance. You are being manipulated so that I might be coerced into removing my previous post.

Just a quick note to apologize for not posting this past month. I have some things to deal with right now and I'm afraid my blog is going to take a back seat.
