The Old Quaker Meeting House

I sit on the board of trustee's for a historical cemetery called "Friends Cemetery" and on the cemetery property sits a Quaker Meeting House dating back to its original construction in 1793, it then burned and was reconstructed in 1818.

The Quaker Meeting House itself does not belong to us but there is a clear possibility that in the near future we may be in a position to assume the meeting house and its preservation. We're very excited about it as we feel it is coming 'home' to us and the cemetery. As unpaid trustees we do the work that we do because we love the cemetery and the meeting house. Many of us have ancestors buried in the cemetery as well. It's a lovely old cemetery with rolling hills and stone walls situated on an old farm road next to a large pond with swans in residence. A peaceful and beautiful place to visit.

I thought I'd share some pictures of the Meeting House and the cemetery with you today.

Here is a picture of the Meeting House today:

And another from probably the 1940's

I acquired the old photos maybe 15 years ago and when I looked at this next picture I decided that the cemetery had ghosts. :o) Can you see them?

Fun to think about ... and exciting to know that we may have our meeting house to care for. Keep your fingers crossed!

Children's Books Freebies

I love the old fashioned graphics on old books. In fact this past weekend Janet and I were out at yard sales and the Materials Exchange and we got some great treasures. Mine included a huge box of old books. Most of them were either late 1800's or early 1900's and a good many were from Amsterdam... some in the old font. There's magic in those old books. That's when beautiful art work went into every book cover. I'll let Janet tell you about her finds (silver) ;o)

This one is especially for Stacey. Thank you Stacey for your comments on your regular visits to my blog. :o)

You're so sensitive.....

The artist's world is limitless. It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away. It is always on his doorstep. ~Paul Strand

While growing up I remember being intensely aware of everything around me. It didn't have to be anything remarkable... it was usually something very ordinary to most that I would find extraordinary in some way.

There were those who told me... "Oh .. you're just so sensitive!" because I also felt things deeply. I considered it a fault, one that I couldn't change.

One day a man who I consider very wise told me "Oh how lucky you are to be so sensitive!" I was shocked.... lucky??? He then explained to me that not everyone was as sensitive as I was, that I could feel music where they could only hear it... that I could smell the magic in a forest and they only saw trees... that I could feel the joy of colors where they only saw a picture...that I could truly see my world where others just looked at life pass them by. My life changed that day... he had given me the greatest gift...to be myself... and I will forever be grateful to him in his wisdom.

Perhaps his words can bring you that same joy.... so I pass them on.

Doors of Ireland

I thought I'd post something a bit different today.

Not too long ago I took a trip to Ireland and Scotland and took many... mannnnnny pictures. One of my favorite subjects is doors and I thought you may like to see them. Of course there are the castles, abbeys, the green green hills, the the Cliffs of Moher, the Giants Causeway.... well... you get the idea. I've picked doors for today and have done it in a short movie. If you have sound it will be playing a light Irish tune.

I hope you enjoy it...

Speaking of treasures......

Any beaders out there planning a trip to New Hampshire? Actually, anyone who wants to learn to bead?

If you are, there is a must see shop in Meredith N.H. called Simply Bead N' Around. The shop is owned and operated by a lovely gal named Jen Curran who has been published for her own unique beading stitch. She will make you feel very welcome in her bright and inspiring beading gallery hosting classes at all levels. She offers a wide array of breathtaking beads and gemstones plus all the necessary findings, wire and tools. I hear she even has a girls night out beading party upstairs. Actually, She doesn't even charge for classes of 6 or more people. Sounds like fun to me! I will definitely be spending some time in Jen's shop this fall when we visit NH. Here's a sneak peek at her beautiful shop....maybe I'll see you there! :o)

New Galleries

Friday was fun... treasure hunting and the bead store. Not too many remarkable treasures this time around. The really good stuff is getting harder to find these days. A great girls day out though and I was due. I spend way too much time in my studio sometimes, becoming a complete hermit.

I've been working on my website design some more. I have decided to redesign my galleries, for jewelry, assemblages and the fantasy art cards so far. I would love it if you would all take a peek for me and let me know what you think of the new designs. If you've been to my website before you may have to clear your cache to see the new galleries.

I'm all bleary eyed now and need to take a break... maybe go play with the mosquitoes and do some weeding in the gardens. (Probably not...lol)

Off and running....

Today is a play day... a day to go treasure hunting. There is a barn where this very nice family has for years accumulated 'goodies' from auctions and attic clean-outs. They are only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the last time we were there the place was buried in snow and it was frigid weather. We still had a great time rooting around and we found some great treasures but today will be our first time to scavenge outside the barn. Lots of smalls were buried in snow so we're excited to see all there is to see today. It's a bit of a drive but well worth it. Oh... and did I mention the bead shop that is nearby? :o)

Play day with the girls!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Can you smell it?

I'm thinking you can smell it wayyyyy over on the west coast!

Last night around 9pm my husband and I settled in to watch a movie. Our dog Snippet was all tucked in... literally.. she has her own little bassinet.

Meanwhile her brother Dakota had gone walk about. (My husband is Australian) I kept looking out the front window to see what he was up to but couldn't see him. I figured once he realized it was getting dark he'd make his way back. He's a clever boy and he knows how to open the screen door to let himself back inside. After about 20 minutes I heard a crash in the bushes. Okay... it's Dakota... chasing chipmunks again.

NOT!

Next thing I hear is Dakota making his way up the walk coughing and choking... then as expected he let himself in the house. Arghhhhhhhhhhh.... we realized very quickly that he hadn't found a cute little chipmunk. He'd had a close encounter of the most unpleasant kind with a skunk!

This isn't the first time he decided to play with the cute little black and white 'dog' so we keep a product called 'Natures Miracle' on hand. You have to soak the dog down with it and let it dry. So my husband curled up on cushions on the side porch with his buddy Dakota last night. They slept out there last night... and tonight too if I have anything to say about it. I think I can taste the smell! I sure hope 'Natures Miracle' does the job it's supposed to do because I don't have nearly enough tomato sauce/juice/paste/puree/spaghetti sauce/ketchup to drown a 30 pound dog.

*Sigh* And he was so cute when he was a puppy.

Once again...

Ah... life in the country :o)

Adirondack Escape

Since we love to camp with our two dogs and the Adirondacks is one of our favorite haunts I thought I'd share a few of my photos from our last trip. It rained every day by the way but I still enjoyed the quiet beauty. The wet dogs in the motor home... not so much.

This is the view of the lake from our campsite. I love all the pine needles, mosses, lichens, ferns etc.

We camped right on the lake so we could launch our canoe right on site and just tie it up for the night. Of course we only got to do that once because of all the rain but we did manage to paddle our way out to one of the islands and back. The fish weren't biting so it was purely for the peace and quiet.

Then one afternoon this bright light appeared in the sky along with a touch of blue so we bolted out the motor home and headed for the woods where we knew there were waterfalls. Actually, photographing on an overcast day is most times better quality and in the case of waterfalls cuts down on reflective glare. So this is 'Secret Falls' or as the natives call it 'Death Falls. (I didn't ask)

Hope you enjoyed your mini vacation in the Adirondacks!

Bee Balm and Hummingbirds

Well the bee balm is in full bloom and the hummingbirds are happy little campers. I thought you might enjoy this picture of one of my gardens which is host to countless butterflies and of course the hummingbirds. That's while it lasts.....

We have a 'visitor'. Not sure what he is.... but he has a ravenous appetite and he loves bee balm.
At any given time you can sit on my front porch and watch as first one stalk of bee balm begins to quiver. (Music from Jaws) Suddenly it's 2" shorter... then 6" shorter. I watch as my bee balm very quickly gets sucked down into the earth... like Caddy Shack! Sometimes if he's not all that hungry he plays lumberjack and 'timberrrrrrrrrrr' they fall over.

Ah... life in the country :o)

Making Progress and New Piece

I said I was going to take a break didn't I? Well I'm feeling a bit less overwhelmed and a tad more prepared for Saturday. I finished a few projects that were begging to be done and this necklace was one of them.

Other than that I just need to pack those last minute 'emergency' items and I'm good to go! :o) Now keep your fingers crossed that we don't have those 'scattered thunderstorms' that they're predicting for Saturday.

I've been so diligent ... posting every day but now I have to take a little break. Lots to do to get ready for a show on Saturday and consumed with a new graphic that I've been working on for days.... it's an Alice in Wonderland theme. Hopefully I can give you a sneak peek in a day or two.

In the meantime it's .. finish projects... price pieces... pack all the 'ditties' and tables... get props ready and so on.

Oh... and Janet and I visited a new gallery yesterday. They were very excited about our work and we will be featured there soon. I've left a few pieces to test the waters.... we'll see.

Natures Child Video

I'm going to be lazy today and post a video that I made 2 years ago. It's of my Natures Child ACEO series. Each of the children has a story so if you want to know about them you can read each of the stories on my website Art by Canace under Art Cards. I hope you have your speakers on because there is background music by Bruce De Boer called Fairy Dance.

It's fun for me to see this video now after a long time. I put lots of love into each one of those little garden children and their stories. Hope you enjoy seeing them.

Have a good day.
