The artist's world is limitless. It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away. It is always on his doorstep. ~Paul Strand
While growing up I remember being intensely aware of everything around me. It didn't have to be anything remarkable... it was usually something very ordinary to most that I would find extraordinary in some way.
There were those who told me... "Oh .. you're just so sensitive!" because I also felt things deeply. I considered it a fault, one that I couldn't change.
One day a man who I consider very wise told me "Oh how lucky you are to be so sensitive!" I was shocked.... lucky??? He then explained to me that not everyone was as sensitive as I was, that I could feel music where they could only hear it... that I could smell the magic in a forest and they only saw trees... that I could feel the joy of colors where they only saw a picture...that I could truly see my world where others just looked at life pass them by. My life changed that day... he had given me the greatest gift...to be myself... and I will forever be grateful to him in his wisdom.
Perhaps his words can bring you that same joy.... so I pass them on.
Best...

Oh yeah? Me too, and it is a VERY good thing most of the time. I would not trade it ever. 'Tis a true blessing.
Wonderful post!
It is something I have experienced when out with non-artist friends. Artists seem to experience things in a different way .... finding the magic in the simplest of things. Perhaps I'm generalizing but we do seem to see art in everything.
After all these years - I thought it was just me. Now I know why we artists. This is a wonderful post which brings back memories of my own childhood that I've come to pass over. Not any more.
Thoughtful post, and pertinent to most creative souls. Thanks.
I was always told I was "too sensitive" as a child, and it wasn't meant as a compliment. Thank you for reminding me that this sensitivity can also be a good thing.
Art embodies all of the senses and to be sensitive is the ultimate compliment that an artist can receive. Wonderful post.
Words of wisdom..I do wish I had someone to have told me that years ago..Most of my life most people just think I am strange..Yet now I know it is a blessing..Thank you for sharing..I found you through Seth.

I am reading about flow and about people who are happy and one of the things that comes up again and again is this idea that everything is interesting. I too think that part of what makes an artist is this sensitive attention. Nice post!
I loved reading this post. What a wise man you met. Wise with wisdom and wise to recognize a young creative spirit in you. Thank you for passing along his wisdom to us all! *smiles* Norma
p.s. hoping this is not a double comment (I signed in mistakenly as my daughter a moment ago):)
I'm impressed by this post and the wisdom you have imparted. What a smart man you came in contact with. It's always wonderful when you learn you have a special gift.
A beautiful truth to share! And I just included that same Paul Strand quote on my "extraordinarily reinvented" website. :) Isn't it wonderful how sensitive minds pick up on the beautiful things in the universe?
